The target species of fish in the South Carolina Surf.
Target Species
Whiting
One of the most common and easiest to catch species that you will find in the surf. Whiting make excellent table fair and can be caught year round.
Pompano
Known for their tasty, white meat, pompano are underrated fighters. They are fast swimmers capable of taking long drag screaming runs.
Bluefish
They don’t get as big down here as they do up north but they are aggressive eaters and hard fighters, often putting on arial displays. Bluefish are a common catch when fishing with live or cut baitfish.
Redfish
Redfish are in the surf year round but things really start heating up in October when the big breeding bulls move in from offshore. They are one of the most prized gamefish that you will find in the South Carolina surf.
Flounder
Flounder are one of the most sought after game fish because they are truly delicious to eat. They are aggressive and easy to catch if you can find them.
Black Drum
A structure oriented fish whose diet is more focused on crustaceans than baitfish. Black drum are underrated table fair and can grow to be over 100lbs.
Speckled Trout
Common in the marshes and occasionally caught in the surf, “specs” are my favorite saltwater fish to eat.
Spanish Mackerel
Spanish mackerel migrate up and down the east coast and that run passes South Carolina in April-May in the Spring and September-October in the fall.
Sharks
Sharks are very common in South Carolina’s surf. Finetooth, Bonnethead, Spinners and Blacktips are the most common and represent very little danger to humans when left alone.
